BlindWine Tips & Tricks

Since playing our first BlindWine® game almost three years ago I have heard many creative ways that our customers play the game. One in particular we thought was very cool and is a fun way to demonstrate how a wine label influences a wine's score. Normally each guest brings a bottle of wine and the players' blind taste and rates each bottle of wine. The player that brought the bottle that receives the highest score wins. Well here is the twist. Have all of your players bring two identical bottles of wine (same year, price, varietal, brand, etc.). After everyone in the party has blind tasted and rated the wine, take the covered bottles away and replace them with the same wine but uncovered so that they can see the labels. Mix up the order so that their original scores are not relevant. Then have everyone taste and rate the uncovered bottles and total up the scores. Compare the scores of the covered wine vs. the uncovered wines. You will be amazed how much seeing the label influences their scores. This proves two interesting points. One, a wine brand name and label is a big influence on the consumer's perception of the quality and taste of a bottle of wine. Two, there are a lot of very good unknown wines in the market today that are inexpensive but until someone tells you that it is good and you associate the label and brand with that recommendation, chances are you won't buy that wine. Lesson learned: Wine is 50% quality and 50% marketing and peer influence. The best part of playing BlindWine® is that it introduces you and your friends to wines that you enjoy and would have never tried otherwise.
